Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua was named the 2023 Miss Universe at the highly anticipated beauty pageant held in San Salvador, El Salvador. The dazzling event, which showcased the beauty and grace of contestants from around the world, culminated in Palacios taking home the coveted title.
In a fierce competition that saw strong contenders from various countries, Anntonia Porsild of Thailand emerged as the first runner-up. The decision was made by a distinguished panel of judges, which included renowned model Halima Aden, “Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg, and former Miss Universe winners Janelle Commissiong and Iris Mittenaere.
The pageant kicked off with twenty semi-finalists, selected based on the results of the preliminary competition and a global fan vote. However, not all contestants made it to the finals. Miss Nepal, the first “curvy” contestant, and Miss Pakistan, who made history by choosing to wear a burkini, unfortunately did not advance past the swimsuit round.
During the swimsuit round, Palacios wowed the audience with her confident stride, wearing a stunning two-piece and a glamorous beaded evening gown. Her poise and elegance set her apart from the rest, securing her position in the final trio alongside Porsild and Moraya Wilson of Australia, who claimed the second runner-up spot.
In the final question and answer segment, Palacios revealed that if given the chance, she would spend a day in the life of the 18th-century British philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. She highlighted Wollstonecraft’s impact on women’s opportunities, showcasing her intelligence and depth of character.
Completing the top five were Miss Colombia and Miss Puerto Rico, both of whom impressed the judges with their exceptional beauty and charisma. Spain’s Athenea Pérez was crowned Miss Congeniality, winning over the hearts of her fellow contestants.
Palacios now takes over the esteemed title from R’Bonney Gabriel of the USA, who held the title of Miss Universe 2022. As the new Miss Universe, Palacios will have the opportunity to advocate for social causes and represent the global community on various platforms.
