Food microbiologist Sana Mujahid explains that bagged lettuce goes through various stages of processing before reaching consumers, drastically increasing the likelihood of contamination. Additionally, pre-cut fruits are also vulnerable to contamination. Mujahid recommends that consumers buy whole fruit and cut it at home to minimize the risk of bacterial infection.
Consumer Reports has compiled a list of foods that pose potential risks, including cheese and deli meats, ground beef, onions, turkey, chicken, papaya, peaches, melons, and flour. Experts advise avoiding contact with contaminated irrigation water and bruised onions and produce to prevent bacterial contamination.
Sadly, according to CDC statistics, over 3,000 deaths occur annually due to foodborne illnesses. To combat this concerning trend, experts stress the importance of staying informed about recalls and handling food safely.
