The 2024 Major League Baseball season kicked off with a bang on Thursday, with a total of 13 games on the schedule. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres got things started with a special two-game set in Seoul, South Korea, marking the first time MLB has opened its season outside of North America.
Throughout the day, CBS Sports provided running analysis of all the games, keeping fans updated on the action. However, not everything went according to plan, as the New York Mets vs. Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves games were both rained out.
Among the winners on Opening Day were the Baltimore Orioles, who had a dominant win over the Los Angeles Angels. Juan Soto had a strong debut with the New York Yankees, while the Dodgers’ MVP trio put on an impressive performance. Nick Martini surprised everyone with a multi-homer game, and lefty starters in the AL Central delivered quality outings. The Arizona Diamondbacks scored an incredible 14 runs in a single inning, and Tyler O’Neill made history with an impressive Opening Day streak.
However, not everyone had a successful start to the season. Mike Trout and the Angels struggled, as did the St. Louis Cardinals and pitcher Miles Mikolas. The Houston Astros bullpen had a rough outing, and there were untimely injuries for Royce Lewis, Justin Steele, and Nick Senzel. The NL East teams, including the Braves, Phillies, and Mets, had their games postponed. The Colorado Rockies suffered a meltdown inning, allowing 14 runs, while the Oakland Athletics were shut out in front of a sparse crowd.
