Title: NASA’s Voyager 1 Overcomes Communication Issue After Faulty Chip Incident
In a recent development at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Voyager 1 spacecraft has successfully overcome a communication issue that occurred in November 2023 due to a faulty computer chip. This spacecraft, the most distant from Earth, had stopped sending back understandable data following the chip malfunction.
Flight controllers were able to trace the problem to the faulty chip and promptly rearranged the spacecraft’s coding to ensure its continued functioning. After months of diligent work, the team at NASA declared success in mid-April 2024 when they received positive engineering updates from Voyager 1.
Despite this achievement, the team is still diligently working to restore transmission of the science data from Voyager 1, which is located more than 15 billion miles away in interstellar space. The communication issue with the spacecraft was likened to a problematic phone call where the other person cannot be heard.
Launched in 1977 to study Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 has been exploring interstellar space since 2012. Its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2, is still operational and located 12.6 billion miles away from Earth.
