Norwegian Military Successfully Lands F-35A Fighter Jets on Motorway
In a groundbreaking display of military capability, two F-35A Lockheed Martin fighter jets landed on a motorway for the first time, according to the Norwegian military. The impressive feat occurred during a military exercise in Tervo, central Finland.
The purpose of this unique landing was to demonstrate the F-35A’s ability to swiftly refuel and take off again, effectively minimizing the vulnerable time spent on the ground during times of war. The Norwegian military referred to this technique as “hotpit refuelling,” which involves refuelling with the engines running immediately after landing.
Major General Rolf Folland, chief of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, expressed his satisfaction with this achievement, stating that the ability to utilize small airfields and motorways enhances the survivability of fighter jets during warfare. The landing on the motorway showcased the F-35A’s versatility and adaptability in operating from unconventional locations.
It is important to note that the F-35A variant of the fighter jet does not possess vertical landing capabilities, unlike its F-35B counterpart. However, the successful motorway landing shows that the F-35A is well-equipped to effectively carry out missions from various types of runways.
The significance of this event is particularly noteworthy for Finland, a recent member of NATO, which shares a border with Russia. In light of their geopolitical situation, Finland has plans to procure 64 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin. The ability to land on motorways and other unconventional runways expands the range of possible operating bases for these aircraft and provides the Finnish military with increased flexibility and strategic advantage.
This achievement by the Norwegian military highlights the continuous advancements in military aviation, and further strengthens the position of the F-35A fighter jets as indispensable assets during times of conflict. With their ability to rapidly refuel and take off, the F-35A fighter jets are set to revolutionize warfare by significantly reducing the time spent on the ground and enhancing overall mission success rates.
