SCADES OF FLOODING IN CHINA’S GUANGDONG PROVINCE PUT MILLIONS AT RISK
In a recent development, major rivers, waterways, and reservoirs in China’s Guangdong province are on the brink of causing disastrous floods, putting the lives of over 127 million people at risk. Emergency response plans have been activated as sections of rivers and tributaries in the Xijiang and Beijiang river basins are reaching unprecedented water levels.
The water resource ministry in China has issued an emergency advisory, urging officials in Guangdong to take immediate action to prevent natural disasters and allocate relief funds and materials. The province has been battered by heavy rain and severe convective weather, leading to damage, evacuations, and power outages in cities like Zhaoqing, Shaoguan, Qingyuan, and Jiangmen.
Footage captured by witnesses shows floodwaters engulfing streets, sweeping vehicles away, and leaving residents stranded in the aftermath. Authorities have suspended ship travel through rivers and deployed emergency rescue vessels to save those in danger. Several hydrological stations have recorded water levels surpassing safety limits, while reservoirs in Guangzhou, a city with a population of 18 million, are dangerously close to flooding.
Neighbouring Guangxi has also faced its share of challenges, with violent hurricane-like winds causing destruction and flooding. Rescuers have been working tirelessly to save individuals stranded in floodwaters. The city of Hezhou in Guangxi has reported 65 landslides, according to state media reports.
With the situation rapidly escalating, it is crucial for authorities to continue monitoring water levels, providing assistance to those affected, and implementing precautionary measures to prevent further devastation in the region.
