Authorities have recently released images of a potential suspect, described as a “person of interest,” regarding the massive fire that engulfed a storage yard and forced the closure of the 10 Freeway on November 11. The fire, which destroyed the storage yard that contained pallets, construction materials, and used vehicles, spread across a vast area of eight acres.
CalFire officials have provided a description of the person of interest, stating that he is a male in his 30s, standing around 6 feet tall, weighing between 170 and 190 pounds, with black hair. The individual was last seen wearing blue shorts, a black jacket, a black backpack, a green scarf, and a knee brace on his right leg. Authorities noted that burn injuries were visible on his left leg.
Both Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass have revealed that the fire was most likely started with malicious intent. An arson investigation is currently ongoing, but no arrests have been made thus far. Authorities have requested the public’s assistance in identifying the person of interest, urging anyone with information to contact Cal Fire’s arson hotline.
Despite initial estimates suggesting that the closure of the 10 Freeway would last until early December, recent surveys have determined that the structural integrity of the deck is more secure than anticipated. Consequently, all lanes are expected to be reopened on Tuesday, relieving severe traffic impacts. Commuters have been encouraged to consider utilizing public transportation to alleviate congestion.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire. However, 16 homeless individuals residing nearby were taken to shelters for their safety. Authorities maintain their commitment to the arson investigation, determined to determine the root cause of the blaze.
