Health Officials Investigating Increase in Whooping Cough Cases Among Children in Montgomery County
Health officials in Montgomery County are currently investigating a significant increase in whooping cough cases among children. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can be serious, especially for young children.
Symptoms of whooping cough include sudden and uncontrollable coughing spells, as well as a persistent cough that can cause vomiting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that babies with whooping cough may struggle to breathe, while teens and adults may only experience mild symptoms.
Whooping cough can easily spread through the air and be contagious for several weeks. In light of the recent outbreak, Montgomery County’s Office of Public Health is advising children who exhibit symptoms of whooping cough to stay home from school to prevent further spread of the disease.
The health department is also urging parents to ensure that their children’s whooping cough vaccinations are up to date. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect against the disease and help prevent outbreaks within the community.
Residents are reminded to be vigilant and seek medical attention if they or their children exhibit symptoms of whooping cough. By staying informed and following the recommendations of health officials, we can work together to prevent the further spread of this potentially dangerous illness.
