The Baltimore Orioles handed the New York Yankees a surprising 2-0 shutout at Camden Yards on Tuesday night, snapping the Yankees’ offensive streak and securing a much-needed win for the struggling Orioles.
Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez delivered a strong performance, bouncing back from a rough outing in his last game to pitch 5.2 scoreless innings against the powerful Yankees lineup. Rodriguez, who struggled with his fastball, relied on his changeup to retire key hitters like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
The Orioles’ offense was relatively quiet for most of the game, but Gunnar Henderson provided a spark with a leadoff homer. An error by Yankees Gold Glover Anthony Volpe allowed the Orioles to score an insurance run late in the game.
Despite the lack of offensive fireworks, the Orioles held on to their early lead thanks to a stellar performance from the bullpen. Danny Coulombe notched his first three-out save as the Orioles’ pitching staff kept the potent Yankees lineup at bay.
With closer Yennier Cano likely unavailable after a strenuous outing, the Orioles know they will need to generate more offense in the upcoming games to support their strong pitching staff. However, for one night at least, the Orioles proved they have what it takes to compete with the best teams in the league. They will look to build on this momentum in the rest of the four-game series against the Yankees.
