Henderson County Health Department Addresses Pertussis Outbreak
Henderson County health officials have confirmed an outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, with 27 reported cases in the area. The health department is actively working to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed to the highly contagious infection.
Most of the reported cases are among school-aged children, as pertussis primarily affects the airways and lungs, spreading easily through coughing or sneezing. Symptoms typically develop within 5 to 10 days after exposure, making it crucial for families to ensure their vaccinations are up-to-date.
While protection against pertussis is provided through the childhood vaccine DTaP, the effectiveness decreases over time. Older children and adults, including pregnant women, are encouraged to receive a pertussis booster shot called ‘Tdap’ to protect themselves and the infants around them.
Individuals in need of the Tdap vaccine can contact their healthcare provider or reach out to the Health Department at 828-692-4223. For more information on pertussis and how to protect yourself and your loved ones, visit (provide website link).
