SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company founded by Elon Musk, achieved another milestone as it successfully launched 23 Starlink satellites into orbit atop its trusty Falcon 9 rocket. This marks the 18th successful launch of the Falcon 9 vehicle. What makes this launch even more special is the historical significance of the booster used.
The Falcon 9 booster, known as B1058, has a remarkable background. It famously carried NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station (ISS) in May 2020, becoming the first crewed launch from American soil since 2011. Since then, B1058 has been entrusted with multiple missions, including 13 Starlink deployments, two Transporter missions, a communication satellite launch, and a resupply mission to the ISS.
After its most recent successful launch, B1058 once again demonstrated its reliability and precision by nailing the landing on SpaceX’s droneship, aptly named “A Shortfall of Gravitas.” The booster was then transported back to Port Canaveral for potential future use, showcasing SpaceX’s commitment to reusability and cost-effectiveness.
SpaceX has continually improved and streamlined its refurbishment process for older boosters in their fleet, allowing for a quick turnaround time between flights. In this case, there was a mere 45-day interval between B1058’s 17th and 18th missions, highlighting SpaceX’s dedication to efficiency and maximizing the potential of their rockets.
While SpaceX maintains a high cadence of launches, the company is also making progress on constructing a new Crew tower. This tower will enable launches of astronauts or resupply missions from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) or Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40). The tower is expected to be fully operational by 2024, and there are even possibilities of a Crew mission being launched sooner.
Looking ahead, SpaceX has an exciting lineup of upcoming missions. These include another Starlink mission, a Transporter mission, and the CRS-29 resupply mission to the ISS.
