Succession, the hit HBO series, was the big winner at the 39th Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards, taking home Program of the Year and Best Drama Series. This is a significant achievement for the show, as it had been nominated for Program of the Year in both 2020 and 2022 but had not claimed the top prize until now.
Succession has now won Best Drama Series three times, joining other renowned series such as “The Americans,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” “Lost,” and “Mad Men” as three-time winners in this category. However, in its first nomination in 2019, Succession lost the Best Drama Series award to “Better Call Saul.”
Alongside “The Last of Us” and “The Bear,” Succession received the most nominations, with five each. In addition to the overall accolades, several cast members were also nominated for Individual Achievement in Drama. Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Jeremy Strong all received nominations in this category, but they ultimately lost to Rhea Seehorn from “Better Call Saul,” who became the eighth consecutive woman to win the gender-neutral category.
“The Bear” managed to win two awards out of its five nominations, including Best Comedy Series and Best New Program. Natasha Lyonne won the Individual Achievement in Comedy for her role in “Poker Face,” becoming the sixth consecutive woman to win this award. Additionally, the Netflix series “Beef” was recognized with the Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries, or Specials award.
Other notable winners included “Bluey” for Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Programming, “Ms. Marvel” for Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming, and “Jury Duty” for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming. Mel Brooks received the Career Achievement prize, while “The Carol Burnett Show” was honored with the Heritage Award.
It is worth noting that the TCA Awards, which usually take place during the summer press tour, were canceled for the fourth consecutive year due to the writers’ strike. The winners were announced just 10 days before the start of final Emmy voting.
In the previous year, the show “Abbott Elementary” won four TCA Awards, including Program of the Year, and went on to win three Emmy Awards.
