Typhoon Khanun Approaching Okinawa: U.S. Military Takes Precautions
The U.S. military stationed on Okinawa is bracing for the arrival of Typhoon Khanun, set to hit the region on Wednesday morning. Experts have warned that this storm could be the most severe the area has experienced in the past five years.
With sustained winds of 132 mph, Typhoon Khanun just falls short of being classified as a super typhoon. The storm is predicted to pass about 64 miles southwest of the Kadena Air Base, raising concerns of potential damage and power outages. Additionally, the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, ranging from 6 to 9 inches, which could result in flooding in low-lying areas.
In anticipation of the approaching typhoon, the U.S. military has implemented precautions and safety measures. Bases on Okinawa have entered Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 2, with military personnel and their families taking necessary precautions to secure their homes, clean up yards, and stock up on essential supplies.
To safeguard military assets and ensure their readiness, the III Marine Expeditionary Force has moved aircraft into hangars and prepared tactical vehicles. Similarly, airmen at Kadena Air Base have cleared the base of debris and ensured that aircraft are ready for any adverse weather conditions.
In an effort to avoid potential damage, ships stationed at the White Beach Naval Facility have departed. These proactive measures aim to minimize the potential impact of Typhoon Khanun on the U.S. military’s operations on Okinawa.
Throughout the approaching storm, the 18th Wing, III MEF, and Marine Corps Installations Pacific will provide updates on social media platforms. These updates will inform the local population and military personnel of any changes in the storm’s trajectory or anticipated impact.
As Typhoon Khanun looms closer to Okinawa, the U.S. military is working diligently to mitigate potential damage and keep personnel safe. With the storm expected to pass in the coming hours, it is crucial for everyone in the region to remain vigilant and stay updated through official channels.
