The 2024 Writers Guild Awards celebrated the best in writing talent from both the East and West Coasts, with Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction taking home the top honors. The awards, which were delayed due to a strike, were held in separate ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
Cord Jefferson, who also recently won an Oscar for Adapted Screenplay, added to his accolades by winning the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award. Errol Morris was recognized for his documentary film The Pigeon Tunnel, taking home the prize for Documentary screenplay.
Succession, The Bear, and Beef continued their awards-season dominance, with wins for Drama Series, Comedy Series, and Limited Series respectively. HBO’s The Last of Us and Fox’s The Simpsons were also recognized, winning for New Series and Animation, respectively.
The ceremony was not only a celebration of current achievements but also a time to honor industry veterans. The WGA presented various honors and tributes, including awards for Comedy Excellence, Career Achievement, and Television Writing Achievement.
The event was hosted by Niecy Nash-Betts in Los Angeles and Josh Gondelman in New York, bringing together the best of both coasts. Overall, it was a night to remember for the winners, with The Holdovers, American Fiction, and The Pigeon Tunnel standing out as some of the night’s biggest successes in Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, and Documentary screenplay categories, respectively.
