Apple is in talks with OpenAI and Google to power AI features in its upcoming iOS 18 software, according to sources familiar with the matter. The discussions are reportedly focused on a “chatbot/search component” for the operating system.
The tech giant has been considering using technology from both OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT technology, and Google, which offers Gemini, its AI-powered chatbot. However, Apple has not made a final decision on which company’s technology to use, leaving the possibility open for licensing tech from both companies or none at all.
Apple has been relatively quiet about its AI efforts, but CEO Tim Cook hinted at upcoming developments during a recent earnings announcement. Cook mentioned ongoing investments in AI and even claimed the M3 MacBook Air as the world’s best consumer laptop for AI.
In addition to incorporating AI features in its iOS 18 software, Apple is planning to release AI-centric laptops and desktops later this year. The company has also made strides in making AI more accessible by releasing open-source large language models that can be used on local devices.
Despite these advancements, details of the specific AI features that will be available on iPhones and other devices remain unclear. The reliability of Generative AI, which is used in technologies like ChatGPT, has also been a concern in the AI community.
More information about Apple’s AI efforts is expected to be revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10. Stay tuned to KP INSIDER for the latest updates on Apple’s AI developments.
